Student Services Department

The Student Services Director is responsible for meeting the needs of all students academically as well as social and emotionally. This role works closely with the student body to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.

  • Freshman and sophomore: scheduling, class recommendations, and credit planning
  • Social/emotional/mental health support for all students
  • Facilitator for Safety Assessment team
  • Academic Counseling: planning to take courses that fit your needs but also challenge you to reach higher as well as supporting students who need more guidance to earn their credits
  • Supports the inclusive school model where students of all abilities are welcomed and bound for success.
  • Collaborates with college advising and junior/senior credit planning

Academic Support Program

The Academic Support Program meets the needs and provides academic success for SMCC students with various learning styles, including students with mild to moderate learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, autism spectrum disorder, generalized anxiety disorders, emotional and health impairments, and other types of academic needs.

  • The Director of Academic Support and Interventionist divide the caseload and serve as a case manager for students with accommodations, serving as the liaison between parents and faculty as well as creating a tailored plan to support their academic needs.
  • Students are provided Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention, such as small group instruction, quiet environment for testing, differentiated instruction, scaffolding, tests read aloud, extended time for testing.
  • Structured study hall provides hands-on support with academic classes, test-taking strategies, organizational and study skills, and monitoring of assignments.

St. André Bessette Open Doors Inclusion Program

The St. André Bessette Open Doors Inclusion Program, established in 2018 as the first full inclusion program at any Catholic high school in Michigan, offers the SMCC experience to students of all abilities, including those with significant cognitive and learning challenges. Students follow an academic path leading to a Certificate of Completion or a Modified Diploma.

  • Students are supported in the classroom with typical peers while receiving differentiated instruction and a modified curriculum honoring the core values and mission of SMCC.
  • Peer Mentors are paired with our students to help tutor them in class, modify the curriculum to meet their needs, and communicate with parents on a daily basis.
  • The program will also include a focus on career and life skills that are designed to help the students prepare for success in life after high school.
